Surprise Container is a mystical fantasy about the downfall of the Machismo world. In this minimalistic exposition that is a simulation of a science lab the artist showcases her works in different genres and techniques she’s created this year after moving to Barcelona.
According to Anna, a capsule discovered in 2022 by parageologists in a tectonic fault of the Ural Mountains was pried open in the Gallery. Inside there were unidentified objects that bore evidence of an unknown civilization from a parallel reality where something catastrophic had happened. The project invites the audience to restore the chain of events on their own and try to figure out why and how it happened.
‘Visual language used by Anna Andrzhievskaya represents a postapocalyptic world of fantasy and hallucinations where impossible is possible and incompatible is compatible. Roaming between the worlds and genres, the artist uses painting and graphics, objects and installations, happenings and performances - both in the real and the virtual planes. Her Surprise Container is a pictorial puzzle, a riddle with its key lost. Staged as a scientific revelation, the exhibition became a real science fiction, and the Gallery’s sterile white walls turned into a lab open for the audience to make their interpretations,’ explained Marina Purgina, independent curator and researcher.
The pinnacle of the project is the large-scale 5-channel video installation, THE DANCE FLOOR, where weird and enfeebled creatures from a different world find themselves at a dance party. The tense atmosphere of joy reminds either of a feast in time of Plague, or a party during a pandemic, where every visitor can join the dance on the remains of an era coming to its end.
