In the year of the centenary of the region the 1st Komi Biennale 'Rediscovering the North' will take place at the National Gallery of the Republic from September 4 to October 10.
Twelve Russian artists, including Anna Nova Gallery's artists Andrey Kuzkin, Vlad Kulkov and Ustina Yakovleva, were invited to take a closer look at the Komi Republic, where in 1889 Wassily Kandinsky found his sources of inspiration. Their goal is to rediscover the North and revive public interest in the culture and history of the Komi Republic.
The results of their work will be shown by the artists at the National Gallery of the Komi Republic, located in Syktyvkar. The exhibition will feature paintings, sculpture, video art, photography, arts and crafts, audio-visual installations.
As Biennial commissioner Pierre-Christian Brochet notes: 'Most biennials invite artists to reflect on abstract themes. But at the 1st Komi Biennale we decided to combine a trip to the Komi Republic and research of its culture and history. The high level of the invited artists promises a very interesting result: a new rethinking of the image of the region. The creator today is a real scientist whose research results in a work of visual art. Starting from September 3 the participants will share their vision with the inhabitants of the republic and the guests'.
