In the new project 'Fur in the Game' Uldus Bakhtiozina reflects on the risks of free self-expression, referring to the cultural code of the fairytales. The artist draws a parallel between visual and literary narratives, using the book 'Skin in the Game' by philosopher Nassim Taleb, in which he defines artists as a category of people who put at stake not only their skin, but also their soul. The fur coat as one of the most important attributes of 'tsarevnost' (royalty) becomes a symbol of risk. The project offers viewers an ironic and philosophical dialogue: is the symmetry possible in relationships, if one of the parties inevitably puts the fur coat at stake?
'When we study folklore as one of the most important cultural codes, we encounter problems of uncertainty and authenticity of knowledge,' says Uldus. — Or, generally speaking, the problem of recognizing nonsense. I turn this moment of uncertainty into a chance to reinterpret folklore and create a new artistic image.'
The exhibition features artist's photographic works alongside kokoshniks created by the author for the film 'Tsarevna Scaling'.
