The Volgo-Vyatsky branch of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Nizhny Novgorod opened the exhibition 'Before and After: Projects at the Vyksa Artist-in- Residence,' reflecting on art residencies as part of the artistic experience. The title of the project emphasizes that participation in the residency has a serious, sometimes radical impact on the artists' work. The exhibition curators ask questions about the temporal and spatial boundaries of the art residency experience: how does it transform after it is over, how does it support an artist's career and influence the contemporary art scene?
The project showcases a selection of works by 19 contemporary artists who have worked in the city of Vyksa, Nizhny Novgorod region since the foundation of the art residency there in 2017. The exhibition will introduce viewers to a variety of media, disciplinary and artistic techniques that authors used in the residency. Among the works is 'Press Machine' (paper, ink), created by gallery artist Haim Sokol during his participation in the programme in 2019.
