Voskhod Gallery presents Fundbüro Geist (Spirit of the Lost Property Office) by Anna Andrzhievskaia. Anna is known for her exhibitions all across Europe, including Art Nou 2024 Festival in Barcelona, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp, and Manifesta 10, but this is her first solo exhibition in Switzerland.
In her sculptures, paintings, and graphic works, Anna explores the topics of emigration and women’s take on things through creation of fantastic worlds inhabited by characters that are both symbolic and absurd. Her vivid colors and naive shapes disguise complex and dramatic stories.
Fundbüro Geist is about Anna’s personal experience of forced migration. After leaving Russia in 2022, she settled down in Barcelona, where a new stage of her life started. Pondering on the loss of her home and the search of her identity in the new world, the artist invites the audience to her Lost Property Office where the past and the future meet and intertwine.
At the exhibition, a series of objects is displayed that remind of transposition and transformation. Some of them are the carpet handwoven by the artist’s great-grandma in Dilijan (Armenia), a string beanie, or a wrapper from Kazakhstan chocolate bar. Similarly to the characters from Jan Švankmajer’s animated movies, these objects gain their voices and start a new life, and yet they are also symbols of lost memories and the artist’s transforming take on her home.
The exhibition is open till January 26.
